Company: August Jackson

My Role: Marketing Manager

CHALLENGE

In 2019, August Jackson experienced its best year to date. But with a banner mark year comes banner mark team performance. Our team gave everything they had to the work, and in the process, felt stretched thin. The agency began experiencing increased miscommunication and unbalanced team dynamics. In staying laser focused on client projects, we had lost sight of each other.

We realized we needed to give the same attention to our people as we did the work. And we all needed to get on the same page.

SOLUTION

I met with our executive team over numerous sessions to talk through these challenges and the values that were most important to us. We used a design thinking approach to help reveal what values were most important to our people.

Ultimately, we decided to group our principles into three of the most important areas our attitudes and actions influence: Our Culture, Our Team Dynamics, & Our Client Work. From there, I wrote copy for each of the Principles and worked with our Design team to create an interactive deck of cards. Employees were each given their own deck to reference. Some have even started to use them as conversation starters during team meetings.

During monthly staff meetings, various team members are recognized for outstanding demonstrations of a specific Principle (and rewarded for it, through a gift card).
